Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has finally spoken out on the controversial N8.64bn wardrobe allowance set to be paid to Nigerian lawmakers next week.
Nigerians had criticized the Senator, who represents the Bayelsa East Senatorial District, for keeping quiet on the issue despite the anti-extravagance comments he made before being sworn in.
In his response via Twitter on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, Bruce begged Nigerians for patience and understanding saying that he can only control his own actions while in the Senate.
He said:
"I only control my actions. The best I can do is influence the actions of my colleagues in the Senate. Nations change over time not overnight"
“My attention had been drawn to news reports about intended payments to be made to Federal Legislators. My investigations establish that payments to be made are those independently decided upon by the RMAFC. To the best of my knowledge, these payments were not discussed at plenary or in private.”
“I urge patience and understanding from all Nigerians even as I assure you that I, Ben Murray Bruce, will continue to be on your side. Let me assure my constituents and the rest of Nigeria that I remain committed to fighting for their interests.”
“This fight can only be effective if I build coalitions with my colleagues. This fight will be dead on arrival if I alienate them. I only control my actions. The best I can do is influence the actions of my colleagues in the Senate. Nations change over time not overnight.”
