5 Best Reasons To Visit Las Vegas

By Carolyn Clarke

Everyone knows someone who has a Vegas story. Whether it was a night pulling in money at the casino, dancing at some of the country’s largest nightclubs, or seeing the show of a lifetime, it sounds like an amazing experience. If you’ve never been to Las Vegas, it’s hard to imagine exactly what you’re missing.

If you’re the type of person who likes new experiences, Vegas is bigger and better than you can imagine. There’s more to see and do in Vegas than just about any other city in the world. Here are the top five reasons why you need to visit Las Vegas.

1. It’s a Rite of Passage

It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, a trip to Las Vegas is a rite of passage. Because the city is a popular destination for bachelor parties, hen nights, weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries, many people associate their trip to Vegas with a major event in their life. Although adult life involves work and administrative tasks, when you show up to Vegas with your best friends or your significant other, you leave that entire behind.

Even if you don’t want to plan your trip around a major life event, the trip itself will inevitably be something to remember. It’s hard to forget the feeling of excitement as you step off of the plane or out of the car at the beginning of your first trip. You’ll also never forget the first time you win big at the blackjack tables or on the slot machines.

2. Attractions from Around the World

Las Vegas may be one of the most quintessential American cities, but it’s also home to a melting pot of cultures from around the world. Some of the world’s greatest chefs—like Wolfgang Puck, Masaharu Morimoto, and Jose Andres—have started restaurants in Las Vegas to share their food with the world. There are smaller restaurants as well, like the famous Lotus of Siam, which started as a hole-in-the-wall Thai restaurant and has since earned the prestigious James Beard Award.

In addition to amazing food, you can often find shows and entertainment from every corner of the globe. The famous Cirque Du Soleil started in Montreal, Canada, but Las Vegas may be closer to its spiritual home given how popular the show has become. The newer generation of shows in Las Vegas include electronic dance music nightclubs and its DJs draw in some of the city’s largest crowds.

3. The Sights Are Iconic

One of the reasons Vegas stays with people so long is all the iconic imagery that surrounds it. Vegas is a jewel in the middle of the desert. In an otherwise desolate and unforgiving landscape, it only takes a short drive out of town before you reach the Colorado River. The water stored at Lake Mead feeds the city’s unquenchable thirst, while the Hoover Dam provides much of its power. Most have seen a movie or two involving the massive sloped walls of the Hoover Dam, but when you see them up close, their size sticks with you.

The Las Vegas Strip is another image permanently entrenched in the minds of all who have visited this city. As you drive along the palm tree lined streets, you’ll be joined by beautiful cars, limousines, and motorcycles that are along for the ride just like you. From the glowing neon of all the casinos, to the daily water fountain light shows in front of the Bellagio, the Strip is something that’s found deep root in the DNA of American culture.

4. Affordability is Possible

With all the glitz and glamour of Vegas, it’s easy to think that you have to be filthy rich to have a good time in Vegas. While having a lot of money can certainly buy just about anything you could ever want, it’s not a necessity. Because Las Vegas is so dependent on tourists, you can get very affordable rates on hotel rooms, flights, and even casino chips if you know where to look.

Some travel websites sell all-inclusive package deals that allow you to save big by committing to spending a certain number of days in the city. Of course, just like your home city, you can find discounts at restaurants, shows, and experiences through coupon websites. Getting 50% an afternoon of ziplining for two, or saving 30% on a day at the spa takes just a little research to find.

5. The Remains of the Wild West

Since Hunter S. Thompson’s infamous book, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Vegas has been a city associated with an experience: full-throttle fun. Even though that book was written nearly fifty years ago, you can still find anything you want in Las Vegas. All along the Strip and in many other places throughout the city, it’s legal to drink alcohol out on the street and, while you may have only shot a gun in a video game, you can fire fully automatic assault rifles and every type of weapon imaginable at shooting ranges in Las Vegas.

Laws are just a little bit different in Las Vegas because the city wants you to have a good time, whatever that entails. The only question is, when do you leave?
