The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming House of representatives bye-election in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government of Lagos State, Babatunde Akinyele, narrowly escaped death on Saturday when his campaign office was attacked by unknown gunmen.
The men, alleged to be brandishing guns, machetes and other dangerous weapons, damaged the doors and windows of the building when it was clear to them that their objective of attacking the aspirant could not be achieved. They also vandalised campaign vehicles of the candidate and went with all the keys of the vehicles.
Disclosing this to The Nation in a telephone chat moments after the attack, Akinyele said he narrowly escaped from his assailants since he left his campaign office barely five minutes before they arrived. He said his neighbour, a retired security operative managed to dislodged the assailants, and seized two hand held pistols from the attackers.
Akinyele who said he has gone to formally lodge the development at the police station said he was shocked at the development. He demanded adequate security before and after the election to forestall any other development.
