In line with the presidential directive to sanitise the Nigeria Police and enhance security in the country, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to officers linked with cult groups to stop their relationship or face the wrath of the law.

Ezike, who gave the ultimatum during his maiden meeting with senior officers and the rank and file of the state command in Benin, lamented that police operations were being sabotaged by officers who divulged official secrets.

He said that such actions had led to the loss of confidence in the police and also made mockery of the overall objectives of the security outfit.

“For officers who choose to fraternise or patronise cult groups or even patronise criminals, you have 48 hours to change your ways. I will have the courage to do the needful.
“When we catch them (criminals), they will spill the beans and I will treat you with the full weight of the law. And for those who sabotage police operations by divulging official secret, the era of technology is here,” Ezike said.

The former Rivers State commissioner of Police charged officers of the command to eschew all forms of corrupt practices, including extortion on major highways, especially in border towns in the state.

He also announced the formation of a Command Monitoring Unit to monitor the conduct and operations of officers and men of the command.

The CP added, “Reports indicate an appalling conduct in our stop-and-search operation along Benin-Okada road. The police along that line are dreaded for their professionalism in extortion.

“If you happen to be a DPO along this line, you must wear your thinking cap and make things happen differently. We can do better than that.
“Therefore, all policemen involved in this operation must show complete respect for human rights and personal dignity of citizens; the way you arrest them, the way you talk to them, the way you treat them must show respect to their rights and the dignity of their persons.”
