The Sango market in Ibadan, capital city of Oyo state, was thrown into pandemonium for as many as 6 hours on Christmas day during which an inferno consumed over 200 shops in the plank section of the market.
The fire at the market located in the Alaro area of Sango reportedly started around 3pm and was yet to be put out as at 8pm.
Men of the Oyo State Fire Service could not put out the fire on the first attempt and had to go to the nearby Eleyele Water Works for a refill when the fire truck ran out of water.
Traders at the market said planks estimated at over N250m were lost in the fire disaster, adding that no lives were however lost in the unfortunate incident.
One of the traders who identified himself as Segun said the fire started after he left his shop where he had attended to a customer.
Another trader, Ade, said he lost planks and equipment worth more than N5m to the fire while yet another trader, Mr Afolabi, said several sawing machines and other logging equipment were lost to the fire.
The fire outbreak at the Sango market in Ibadan comes barely a day after a more devastating fire incident at the Chicason Group’s gas depot in Nnewi, Anambra State, that claimed over 100 lives.
The Nnewi inferno was said to have been triggered after a truck started offloading butane gas without waiting for the mandatory cooling time.
As of Friday, a number of people were still unaccounted for in Nnewi with family members now searching the bush for loved ones yet to be seen since the fire incident.

He said, “Shortly after I attended to a customer who called me on phone, I had the call that the shops had caught fire.”

“Each time the vehicle left to refill water, we lost more shops because the fire would gain more ground. Don’t forget this is the time of the year when fire incidents are rampant because we are in the dry season,” Afolabi lamented, calling on the government to come to the aid of the traders.
