American Anti-Gay Pastor Permanently Banned From South Africa

The outcry from a civil rights group and an online petition garnering over 60,000 signatures has led to the permanent barring of American anti-gay Pastor, Steve Anderson from South Africa on Tuesday.

The clergyman who was set for a “soul-winning” revival come this weekend was denied entry into the country as a result of his homophobic stance and characterisation of gays as “sodomites” and “paedophiles”.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba declared the very vocal preacher a“prohibited person” following objections over his “hate speech”.

He also noted Steve Anderson’s visa exemption status, enjoyed by Americans travelling to South Africa, had been revoked.

“If we find him at any of our ports of entry, we will detain and deport him,” he said.

“We don’t want him in this country.”

“Steven Anderson and members or associates of his church are prohibited from entering the Republic of South Africa,” Gigaba said at a press conference in Cape Town.

“We have a duty to prevent harm and hatred, in all forms, against LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersex) as against any other person in a democratic state
,” Gigaba said.

Steven Anderson, who pastors Faithful Word Baptist Church in Arizona, famously prayed for current US President Barack Obama’s death in 2009 for his pro-choice stance on abortion.

His anti-gay stance has always courted controversy especially his speech in the wake of the tragic Orlando Nightclub shooting in June, according to this report.

The ‘man of God’ was noted to have said “there’s 50 less paedophiles in this world” in response to the horrific incident .

Responding to his ban, Anderson wrote in a Facebook post,

I feel sorry for people who live in South Africa.”

He, however, intends to visit Botswana as scheduled.

South Africa is one of the few countries in Africa that recognises gay rights and the only one that allows same-sex marriages.

Anderson also referred to Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Anglican archbishop Desmond Tutu as a “pervert… who goes around in a pink dress” during a radio interview today, attacking the bishop for his support of the LGBTI community.
