Lagos State Government has vowed to alleviate the difficulties that indigents in the State face while trying to access justice.

The Director Public Advice Center, Mrs Tola Akinsanya disclosed this at a sensitisation program in Badagry assuring that Lagos State has made it possible for everybody, irrespective of religion, sex and tribe to have equal access to justice, whether rich or poor.

She said that investigation revealed that a lot of people could not access justice because of the cost and because of that, some of them resulted to self-help.

She added that some do not know where to seek redress when their rights have been infringed upon and it is for this reason the PAC has resolved to come out to sensitise and create more awareness among the people of the State on a wide range of legal issues.

Akinsanya informed that the State Government has put in place structures and avenues where every resident of the State is to benefit from by setting up offices, through the Ministry of Justice, for the benefit of the public to assist residents of the State and provide legal assistance to protect the everyone from injustices.

'One of such offices is the Public Advice Centre (PAC) which serves as the first port of call for residents of the State in distress, those whose rights have been violated and those seeking information on their rights and responsibilities. This Office is accessible to all residents in the State and its services are free.

The Public Advice Centre plays a very vital role in the lives of residents of the State, ensuring they reap the dividends of democracy' Akinsanya noted.

She added that the main objective of PAC is to provide free independent information and legal advice to the people of Lagos State seeking to know what their rights and responsibilities are on a wide range of issues, i.e. how to take action or where to seek recourse.

'To this end, it is pertinent to mention that the Centre successfully handled a total of five hundred and forty four (544) cases from September, 2016 till date'.
