Ex Benue Gov Suswam Meets Bail Condition

The former governor of Benue State, Dr. Gabriel Suswam, on Monday evening met his bail condition to avert being remanded in Kuje prison as ordered by Justice Gabriel Kolawole.
Justice Kolawole of the Federal High Court in Abuja had this afternoon granted Suswam and two others who are being charged for financial misappropriation a bail of N250m with two sureties each, and adjourned the case till September.

Contrary to media reports that Suswam and the two other accused persons had been taken to Kuje prison for failing to meet their bail conditions, Nigerian Concord’s reporter who was at the court reported that the former governor who met the bail conditions left the court premises two hours ago.

Meanwhile, an earlier report by this newspaper that Suswam’s successor, Mr. Samuel Ortom, had concluded plans to have the case transferred to Makurdi in order to use the State judiciary to humiliate the former governor was this morning confirmed when the prosecution counsel, Mr. Aliyu Esq, made an application before Justice Kolawole for the case file to be transferred to a court in Benue state.

The prosecution counsel based his application on the fact that the said crime was committed in Makurdi but the defence counsel, Barrister Taiwo Taiwo, opposed the application, saying that the case shouldn’t be transferred owing to security challenges in the state.

The defence counsel pressed further that his client’s security cannot be guaranteed owing to the suspicious interest of the state government in the case.

In hi ruling on the application to transfer the case to Makurdi, Justice Kolawole ruled in favour of Gabriel Suswam, saying that he is competent to preside over the case in Abuja.
