The White House announced Tuesday that President Donald Trump is set to nominate Jon Huntsman, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman as U.S ambassador to Russia.
Huntsman served as U.S. ambassador to China from 2009 to 2011 and has also served under the administrations of five U.S. presidents and was a candidate for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. According to Politico, Utah was offered the position in March. The position of Russian ambassador is now a very key position following the allegations by the U.S that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, and had ties to the Trump campaign. Allegations which have debunked repeatedly by President Vladmir Putin.
Following the appointment of Huntsman, he will head to Moscow as the U.S. Congress and a special counsel to investigate Russia’s role in the 2016 presidential election and allegations that Trump’s campaign had ties to Moscow.
Moscow says it would welcome anyone who was a “convinced proponent” of establishing a dialogue with Russia.
