Police Warn Against Attacks On Campaign Rallies In Anambra

The Police in Anambra state on Tuesday warned that anybody or group of persons planning to cause trouble in the November 18 governorship poll will be dealt with.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Garba, in a statement said the plan was “unacceptable”.

The statement read in part, “Our attention has been drawn to the fact that some misguided elements have perfected plans to disrupt the relative peace through streets protests and to declare that the Anambra State governorship election, scheduled for November 18, 2017, will not hold.

“This is to achieve their selfish political aggrandisement, thereby threatening democratic processes causing serious security threats in AnambraState in particular and the country at large. This is unacceptable and would not be tolerated.

“In as much as the command and sister agencies respect the right of individuals to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, we would however not fold our arms and watch disgruntled elements truncate the peace in the state which the law enforcement agencies are working assiduously to maintain.”

According to Punch, a source revealed that secessionist group has perfected plans to attack political rallies in the state.

“These people want to cause voter apathy in that election. They want to start now to cause fears in the minds of the people.

“The implication of this is that the Federal Government may flood Anambra State with the army and police in reaction, and in the end, our people will be killed indiscriminately and this can cause some people to stay at home during the election to avoid trouble,” the source said.
