Charlottesvilve Elects First African-American Female Mayor After Months Of White Supremacist Violent Rallies
The city of Charlottesville, Virginia has elected the first African-American woman to serve as its mayor, less than six months after white supremacist embarked on violent rallies.
Nikuyah Walker, the first African-American woman to serve as the city’s mayor was elected on Tuesday night alongside Heather Hill as the Vice Mayor. They will now preside over City Council meetings in the state.
According to The Daily Progress, The Charlottesville City Council voted 4-1 to approve Nikuyah Walker (I) who's also the first independent elected to the Charlottesville City Council since 1948.
Last year, she criticized the city's response to the deadly white supremacist rally, which left one dead and dozens injured in August 2017.
Nikuyah Walker replaces outgoing Mayor Mike Signer, who will now become a member of the City Council.
