Just days after daring the authorities to probe him, controversial pastor Bishop Daniel Obinim has turned himself in to the Tema police in Ghana.
According to reports, Obinim reported at the Tema police station after he was ‘invited’ by the police for questioning in relation to the flogging scandal that took place in his church. In case you missed it, you can read the story here.
Obinim has however been transferred to the Accra Police Headquarters for further questioning after his supporters began to gather at the station.
The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur is said to have reported Bishop Obinim to the Accra Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVSSU) following the release of the flogging footage on social media and the subsequent public condemnation. A private legal practitioner, Lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu and two others have also filed suits against him, seeking to have the bishop arrested and prosecuted for his conduct.
Lawyer Sosu is also seeking an order from the Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court that would protect ‘the fundamental human rights’ of members of Bishop Obinim’s church.
Obinim has not yet been charged by the Police but there are reports that he is likely to only be cautioned for his behavior.
