The Tiv Traditional Council yesterday officially announced the death of the Tor Tiv IV, Orchivirigh Alfred Akawe Torkula, to put an end to the controversy surrounding the sudden demise of the paramount ruler.
In order not to allow the traditional stool to be vacant, the council quickly announced that the Ter Guma, Chief Ivokor Unongo, is the acting Tor Tiv. Unongo is the longest serving second class chief in the Tiv chiefdom and he is from Guma, where the late Tor Tiv hailed from.
The announcement of the Tor Tiv’s death came after the Tiv Traditional Council converged in Gboko town, the ancestral home of the Tiv nation, for the ancestral meeting known as ‘Ijir Tamen.’ The acting Tor Tiv unveiled to the public the sad journey to the ancestors of the late Torkula.
However, it was gathered that the traditional council has reserved the announcement of the date of burial of the monarch and said it will be announced in due course after designed traditional rites had been performed.
Tor Tiv IV, Orchivirigh Alfred Akawe Torkula, the Begha U Tiv (Lion of the Tiv nation) was born on 10th July, 1944 at Tse-Torkula in Mbadwem District of Guma local government area of Benue State.
Torkula became king after the death of Tor Tiv III, Akperan Orshi, and got installed on April 21, 1991, reigning for about 23 years before he finally joined his ancestors.
Meanwhile, Governor Samuel Ortom has condoled with the family of the deceased monarch and the entire Tiv, describing his death as an irreparable loss to the entire Tiv kingdom.
