“God is not black, God is not white, God is God” – Dr. David O. Oyedepo
Please permit me to open your eyes to some undocumented stories about Africa’s history. This article is a bit longer than my usual articles, but it is loaded.
Before the arrival of the whites to Africa, Africans were people of dignity, we crafted our own weaponries, we were nobles, we were proud to be called farmers, hunters and warriors, our ladies were naturally beautiful without the use of artificial eye lashes and powders, they were the dream of every man, they were reserved and walked with dignity, they were indeed flowers and not leaves. And there came the whites; who were adventurers, nobles in their own callings, who had the ambition to rule not only their own territories but also weaker territories. They were educated, they had the superior mentality, they wanted to bring the world to their own way of living and they needed to spread their tentacles, but because they were smart and intelligent they had to device a way of taking over not only our territories but also our posterity. They needed our strengths because they believed that superiors shouldn’t engage in hard labors, they needed our gold and diamonds because they knew that gold and diamnonds could make any nation great, they needed our crude oil in order to power their equipments that we didn’t have, they needed our populations to sell their products to, they needed our sculptures because they were fascinated by our creativity and imaginative power, they needed our young men and women to work in their plantations, wash their clothes, scrub their floors, remove their wastes, shine their shoes, take care of their pets, run errands for them, because their young men and women were too dignified to do them. They were not wicked, they were just ambitious.
They couldn’t break us by force because we were united, they knew we won’t give in to their advances because we were people of dignity, they knew we were intelligent, they saw our sculptures even without proper education, they knew we have the potential to buy their plantations and make them work in them, they knew we had respect for our elders, they knew we love and respect our women, they knew we weren’t lazy because we were workers and they knew that we wont betray ourselves because we are Africans.
Mind you, they were smart and intelligent, they were strategists and thinkers. They needed to devise means to break us up, and turn us against one another. They held meetings during the night seasons because they knew that great ideas flies more during the night season, they read books and researches to get the thoughts and opinions of the authors, even though some of the meetings didn’t produce results they still held another because they weren’t only determined but they knew that if they could conquer Africa then they can conquer the world. Then at last, they got it, they got the secret to divide us apart, and what was the secret? If they could make us believe that we are inferior , if they could make us believe that God is white while the devil is black, if they could make us believe that we can’t produce anything that can meet international standard, if they could make us believe that virginity is “old school,” if they could make us believe in quick fixes, if they could make us believe in regionalism, factionalism and sectionalism, if they could make us believe that one tribe is superior to the other, if they could make us run after money rather than impact, if they could make us believe that we need to impoverish people in order for them to respect and fear us, if they could make us believe that we are baboons and as such should behave as one, if they could make us believe that anyone who has money is a thief or into rituals and as such we should follow their path, if they could make us believe in violence as the tool for political change, if they could make us accept cultism as the solution to oppression and intimidation, and if they could make us believe that they are the cause of our problems, then it will be easier to lead us away in chains.
And the truth is they did. They conquered us and bound us in both physical and mental chains. Immediately they were able to penetrate our minds with their lies, they took over our lives and turned fathers against children and vice versa, made our women who were once dignified to run after their foreign currencies in exchange for something they once held so precious, made Africa leaders to loot their nations’ treasuries and keep in their countries indirectly improving their economies, and made us believe that black means inferiority. It’s time for Africa to unchain themselves not through violence or hate, but through the change in mentality. They didn’t defeat us with their weapons; they took over our lives, lands and posterity immediately they made us believe their lies. The whites are intelligent, smart and strategists and so, we can learn form them and use it to better our lives and continent.
Africa has the potential of greatness but our true greatness may not fully manifest until we successfully unchain ourselves from the chain of slavery, dependency and inferiority complex and walk with our heads up high.
